China's humanoid-robot industry has captured global attention with machines capable of running, dancing, performing martial-arts movements and even executing acrobatic maneuvers.
Unitree Robotics has emerged as one of the most visible companies in that race, with its humanoids becoming a regular feature of high-profile demonstrations and the company's planned Shanghai listing drawing extraordinary investor demand. Unitree is widely described as the world's best-selling humanoid robot maker, and Reuters reports that the company had delivered around 18,000 bipedal humanoid robots by July.
But the industry's next challenge is much harder than making robots dance.
It is proving that the machines can perform useful work reliably enough to justify their cost.
From spectacular demonstrations to useful machines
Humanoid robots have become one of the most visible symbols of the physical-AI boom.
Unlike software-based AI systems, humanoid machines are designed to operate in the physical world. They can potentially move through human environments, manipulate objects and perform tasks originally designed for people.
Unitree has used demonstrations to showcase that potential.
Its robots have been shown running, dancing and performing martial-arts routines, helping the company build a powerful consumer and investor profile.
The demonstrations prove that the hardware can execute complex movements.
But movement alone does not create a viable robotics business.
Companies buying humanoids ultimately need the machines to perform useful tasks repeatedly, safely and with minimal human supervision.
The commercial test arrives now
That question is increasingly urgent as China's robotics industry enters a new phase.
Reuters reports that more than 300 companies are participating in the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, where more than 2,000 exhibits and more than 150 new product launches are being showcased.
The scale of the event reflects how quickly the sector has expanded.
But industry experts are also demanding evidence that humanoids can generate a real economic return.
Robots may need to work for long periods, operate safely around people, cope with unpredictable environments and perform tasks consistently.
Those requirements are considerably harder than completing a choreographed demonstration.
The economics remain difficult
One of the industry's biggest challenges is price.
Reuters reports that many humanoid robots currently cost between roughly 300,000 and 500,000 yuan, depending on the model and configuration. That can make them difficult to justify for businesses when compared with the cost of human labor.
Companies therefore need to demonstrate that robots can do more than replace a worker for a few tasks.
They must provide enough productivity gains to cover the purchase price, maintenance, software and deployment costs.
That calculation may eventually improve as manufacturers increase production.
Mass manufacturing could lower hardware costs substantially, particularly in China, where large electronics and automotive supply chains can be adapted for robotics.
Unitree enters the public markets
The pressure to scale is one reason Unitree's planned IPO is so significant.
The company is set to list on Shanghai's STAR Market after raising roughly 6.1 billion yuan, or about $905 million, in an offering that was reportedly oversubscribed by more than 8,000 times.
The enthusiasm is extraordinary.
The market is effectively placing a major bet on the future of humanoid robotics, even though large-scale commercial adoption remains in its early stages.
The proceeds are intended to help Unitree fund robot AI research, body and product development and manufacturing expansion.
The AI inside the robot matters more than the choreography
One of the biggest technological hurdles is not mechanical movement but intelligence.
A humanoid has to understand its surroundings, recognize objects, plan actions and adapt when conditions change.
A robot that can repeat a programmed dance routine is operating in a highly controlled environment.
A warehouse worker, by contrast, might encounter a misplaced package, a blocked aisle, a damaged component or another person unexpectedly entering its path.
The AI system must respond in real time.
That is why the industry is increasingly focused on embodied intelligence, combining perception, language, planning and motor control.
Unitree is also working with Chinese AI company DeepSeek. DeepSeek invested 140.8 million yuan in Unitree's IPO, taking a 2.31% stake, and the companies plan to collaborate on mechanical engineering, motion control and embodied intelligence.
China has a manufacturing advantage
China's robotics push is backed by a deep domestic manufacturing ecosystem.
The country has extensive expertise in batteries, motors, sensors, electronics and precision manufacturing — all critical components for humanoid robots.
That makes it easier for Chinese companies to move from prototype production to larger-scale manufacturing.
Industry data also indicates that China currently accounts for the majority of global humanoid shipments. Reuters recently put China's share at about 82%.
The country is therefore not simply developing individual robot companies.
It is building an industrial ecosystem around physical AI.
U.S. restrictions create another challenge
The growth of Chinese robotics is also becoming part of the broader technology rivalry between Washington and Beijing.
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has restricted new foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots from receiving certain equipment authorizations, creating an additional barrier for companies such as Unitree seeking to expand in America.
The restrictions reflect concerns over national security, data collection and potential cyber risks.
That could limit the size of Unitree's addressable U.S. market even as demand for humanoids expands globally.
At the same time, the restrictions could encourage American companies to accelerate domestic development.
Tesla, Figure AI, Agility Robotics and Boston Dynamics are among the leading U.S. players pursuing different approaches to humanoid robotics.
The real race is about productivity
The ultimate winner in humanoid robotics will probably not be the company with the most impressive viral video.
It will be the company whose machines can perform useful work at a lower total cost than the human or traditional-machine alternative.
That could initially mean narrow tasks in warehouses, factories, logistics operations, hotels or retail environments.
Humanoids do not necessarily have to replace workers completely to create value.
They may simply need to perform specific repetitive jobs for long periods without tiring, reducing staffing requirements or making operations more flexible.
A pivotal moment for the industry
Unitree's public-market debut arrives at exactly the moment when investors are beginning to ask harder questions.
The spectacular demonstrations have already proven that humanoid robots can move.
The next stage is proving they can work.
If Unitree and its competitors can combine falling hardware costs with more capable embodied AI, humanoids could become one of the most important industrial technologies of the coming decade.
If they cannot, the sector could face an investment backlash after the current wave of enthusiasm fades.
For now, Unitree sits at the center of that debate.
Its dancing robots have helped turn the company into a global symbol of China's robotics ambitions. Its IPO will test whether investors believe those machines can eventually become something much more valuable than entertainment: productive workers in the physical economy.
