Samsung Electronics is preparing a potential shareholder-return program worth more than 100 trillion won, or approximately $72 billion, as the South Korean technology giant looks to distribute more of the enormous profits generated by the artificial-intelligence semiconductor boom.

The plan, which has been reported by Korean media and cited by Reuters, is expected to be considered by Samsung's board later in August. The package could include a special dividend and a commitment to return approximately 50% of free cash flow to shareholders. Samsung had not formally confirmed the details as of August 20.

If approved at anything close to the reported scale, the program would represent one of Samsung's largest shareholder-return commitments and would reinforce a broader transformation taking place across South Korea's semiconductor industry.

Samsung is benefiting from the AI memory cycle

The proposed payout comes as Samsung's semiconductor business enters a potentially powerful period.
