The parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has agreed to acquire Lithuania-based Saldo Bank, marking a significant step in the effort to bring cryptocurrency services closer to traditional banking.
Payward agreed to the acquisition for an undisclosed price. Subject to regulatory approval, the transaction is expected to close in 2027 and would give the company access to an established European banking operation.
The strategic objective is broader than adding another business to a corporate portfolio. Payward wants to provide customers with more financial services through a single relationship.
From crypto trading to everyday financial services
The proposed transaction could allow Payward to offer European customers interest-bearing deposits, loans, card services and euro payments, in addition to its existing digital-asset services.
Saldo Bank already offers deposit products, consumer and business lending, and payment services. Payward has said that regulated banking infrastructure would help it serve European customers more like a primary financial institution.
For users, combining these services could reduce the need to move between separate platforms to manage conventional money and digital assets.
For Payward, a wider product range could create additional revenue sources and increase customer retention. Banking services could also make the company less dependent on the volume of cryptocurrency trading, which can fluctuate dramatically with market sentiment.
The opportunities come with regulatory risks
Acquiring a bank does not eliminate the challenges of operating across multiple financial systems.
The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval, and its financial contribution will depend on the purchase terms, integration costs, customer adoption and the profitability of the products eventually offered.
Deposits, loans and payment services also carry risks that differ from those associated with running a crypto exchange. A broader business may provide more diversified revenue, but it also adds operational complexity and regulatory responsibilities.
Traditional banks and cryptocurrency companies have increasingly overlapping ambitions. Established financial institutions are exploring digital-asset services, while crypto businesses are seeking access to regulated payment and banking infrastructure.
The competitive question is whether companies such as Payward can combine the convenience of digital platforms with the controls, reliability and customer protections expected from regulated financial institutions.
Investor takeaway: Payward's proposed bank acquisition is part of a wider effort to expand beyond crypto trading. Its significance will ultimately depend on execution, regulatory approval and whether new financial services can produce sustainable earnings.
