Bitcoin is holding above $77,000 as the cryptocurrency market attempts to consolidate one of its strongest rallies of the year, with investors encouraged by expectations for friendlier U.S. digital-asset regulation and a more supportive liquidity environment.

Bitcoin gained about 1.3% early Monday to roughly $77,091 after reaching above $79,000 during the recent rebound. Other major cryptocurrencies, including Ether, XRP and Solana, were also higher, although some had pulled back from their weekend highs.

The ability to remain above $77,000 is important because the rally has already produced enormous gains in a short period.

The next question is whether Bitcoin can turn a powerful recovery into a sustainable trend.

The rally began with a major shift in market conditions

Bitcoin's move accelerated after the U.S. Treasury announced plans to expand purchases of longer-dated Treasury securities.

The announcement initially pushed bond yields lower and helped weaken the dollar.

For cryptocurrencies, that created a more favorable environment.

Lower yields reduce the relative attractiveness of government bonds, while a weaker dollar can encourage investors to seek alternative stores of value.

Bitcoin has increasingly benefited from these macroeconomic shifts as institutional participation has grown.

The CLARITY Act provides a political catalyst

The rally also received an important political boost.

President Donald Trump has urged Congress to pass a “fair” version of the CLARITY Act, legislation intended to establish a clearer regulatory framework for the U.S. cryptocurrency industry.

The bill would address one of the industry's most persistent problems: uncertainty over whether different digital assets should be treated as securities, commodities or other types of financial instruments.

Trump's support has encouraged investors who believe the United States could become more hospitable to digital assets under the current administration.

However, the legislation remains stalled.

Important disagreements remain over asset classification, stablecoin rewards and restrictions on cryptocurrency activity by members of Congress and other government officials.

Bitcoin has already tested $79,000

The latest rally took Bitcoin above $79,000 before it pulled back slightly.

That is significant because the cryptocurrency had been stuck in a much lower range only days earlier.

The rapid move was partly fueled by a major short squeeze.

More than $4 billion in bearish crypto positions were liquidated during the rally, according to CoinGlass data cited by AP.

Forced buying helped push Bitcoin through resistance levels faster than ordinary demand might have.

Now that much of the bearish leverage has been removed, the market needs fresh buyers.

The $77,000 level becomes important

Bitcoin's ability to remain above $77,000 matters because it is becoming a potential support level.

If buyers repeatedly defend that area, traders could gain confidence that the recent breakout has become a genuine change in market structure.

A decisive failure to hold the level, however, could encourage profit-taking.

The market could then return toward the mid-$70,000s or lower, especially if ETF flows weaken or Treasury yields rebound.

ETF demand will determine the quality of the rally

One of the most important indicators is the behavior of spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Institutional investors can now gain Bitcoin exposure through traditional investment accounts, making ETF flows a direct measure of large-scale demand.

The recent rally has been accompanied by stronger ETF inflows, providing more credibility than a move driven solely by derivatives.

But investors need to see persistence.

A few strong sessions are encouraging.

Consistent inflows over weeks would provide much stronger evidence that institutions are rebuilding Bitcoin exposure.

Financial conditions remain supportive — for now

The broader macroeconomic backdrop has also improved for risk assets.

Treasury's intervention in the long-term bond market has pushed yields lower from recent highs.

That has helped lift Bitcoin, gold and other alternative assets.

At the same time, concerns about the U.S. dollar have increased.

The combination is sometimes described as a “debasement trade,” with investors purchasing assets they believe can retain value if fiscal deficits, inflation or currency weakness remain persistent.

Bitcoin's participation in that trade represents a notable change in market behavior.

Geopolitical risk could complicate the rally

The positive backdrop has a major counterweight: geopolitical uncertainty surrounding Iran.

The United States is preparing new sanctions against Tehran, while oil supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remain disrupted.

That is important for Bitcoin because higher oil prices can increase inflation.

Persistent inflation could make central banks reluctant to cut rates and potentially push bond yields higher again.

Such a reversal could weaken the liquidity conditions currently helping cryptocurrencies.

Ether and altcoins are joining the move

The recovery is not confined to Bitcoin.

Ether rose about 2.7% early Monday to approximately $2,457, while XRP gained around 2.4% to $1.48. Solana, Cardano and BNB each gained more than 2%.

The breadth is encouraging because a rally involving multiple major digital assets suggests a broader improvement in market sentiment.

However, altcoins generally carry higher volatility than Bitcoin.

A reversal in the main cryptocurrency could therefore produce substantially larger losses across smaller tokens.

Bitcoin remains far below its longer-term peak

Even after the recent rally, Bitcoin has not returned to its earlier record levels.

That provides room for further gains but also illustrates how much work remains before bulls can claim a complete trend reversal.

The cryptocurrency's recent gains have been dramatic, but the market still needs to establish a sequence of higher lows and sustain institutional demand.

A single week of strong performance is not enough to confirm that a long-term bear phase has ended.

The rally's composition matters

The latest move has three major components.

First, macroeconomic conditions improved as Treasury yields fell and the dollar weakened.

Second, political expectations improved after Trump's renewed support for crypto legislation.

Third, derivatives positioning created a large short squeeze that amplified the price movement.

The first two factors can persist.

The third cannot.

That is why investors are now waiting to see whether genuine demand replaces forced demand.

Bitcoin enters a crucial consolidation phase

The market is therefore shifting from breakout mode to confirmation mode.

Bitcoin has already demonstrated that buyers can overpower the bears.

Now it needs to demonstrate that those buyers are willing to remain active at higher prices.

ETF flows, spot-market volume, funding rates and institutional positioning will all be important.

If the market holds above $77,000 while those indicators remain supportive, the cryptocurrency could make another attempt at $80,000.

If buying fades and leverage begins building again, volatility could return quickly.

Regulation could become a structural catalyst

The largest potential long-term catalyst is still U.S. regulation.

A successful CLARITY Act would give the industry a clearer legal framework and potentially encourage banks, asset managers and other institutions to participate more aggressively in digital assets.

That could increase demand across Bitcoin, Ethereum and major tokens.

But until Congress actually passes legislation, investors are trading on expectations.

That makes political headlines unusually important.

The market is approaching a major decision point

Bitcoin's hold above $77,000 represents an encouraging sign after the recent explosive rally.

The cryptocurrency has moved from a prolonged period of weakness to a market in which bulls are once again challenging major resistance levels.

But the next stage will be more difficult.

Short sellers have been forced out.

The easy momentum gains have already occurred.

Now the market needs sustained capital from investors who believe Bitcoin deserves to remain above $77,000.

For now, the technical picture and regulatory backdrop remain constructive.

Bitcoin is holding its ground, the broader crypto market is advancing and expectations for a more favorable U.S. policy environment remain strong.

The critical question is whether that optimism can carry Bitcoin through the next major psychological barrier at $80,000 — and whether it can do so without another surge in leverage creating a new liquidation-driven reversal.
